As the month draws to a close, we would like to wish a happy birthday (belated if we unfortunately missed it) to all of our friends and family born in May! May is full of life, color, and beauty as we transition from spring into the summer months. A month this luscious deserves only the most gorgeous of gems as it’s dedicated birthstone- the Emerald. Here at Studio 703, we love to work with this vibrant stone to create custom, one-of-a-kind pieces such as cuffs that pack a punch in a bracelet stack, or rings that look like they belong in a museum!
It is only natural a stone with beauty of this magnitude was worshiped by ancient civilizations all around the world. The name “Emerald” was derived from the term “Smaragdus”, the Greek word for green. In most cultures, including the Egyptians and Hindus, it was believed to confer riches, power, eloquence, and rebirth, and in others, it was believed to sharpen wit and memory and even give the wearer or holder the power to predict the future. In others, it was even thought to cure diseases like malaria.
Romans worshiped it in the belief it represented Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. With that representation, they also believed it to be the revealer of truth, and used it to cut through illusions and falsity of a lovers oath.
Indians and Egyptians believed it to be a symbol of eternal love and rebirth, or a representation of the cycle of life. It was Cleopatra’s most treasured gem and through her, the stone became a show of power and wealth throughout all civilizations leading it to be used in fine jewelry and even crowns of the higher class.
Emerald has a relatively high ranking of 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, yet is still a brittle stone and scratches more easily than other stones. One quality that makes them so unique is the impurities found in each stone mined and it has been widely accepted that every stone will be one-of-a-kind with its own imperfections.
Found across the world in a wide variety of greens ranging from pale, patchy green mined in Russia, to a vibrant clear green mined in Zambia, to deep bluish green hues mined in India, each country it is mined in produces a different shade and clarity from the last.
Working with emeralds is a sure fire way to create a piece of jewelry found no where else in the world as each stone is one-of-a-kind. Rebecca designs some of the most amazing pieces with this beautiful stone, both custom and available to shop at our studio and on our website.
In addition to 3 diamond eternity bands representing each of their children, this client designed the most stunning emerald ring for his wife’s birthday. The process was drawn out but at long last, the final product was completed and could easily be taken for a piece that belongs in a museum.
These gorgeous beauties are available on our website and we would love to work with you to create a stunning, one-of-a-kind, custom emerald cuff!
